An ignition coil acts like a powerful electrical transformer that boosts your car's low battery power into a massive jolt of electricity. Inside the vehicle's electrical system, the battery only provides a weak 12 volts, which isn't strong enough to create a spark in the engine. The ignition coil takes this low voltage and rapidly cranks it up to tens of thousands of volts.
